Varioscale Inc. was founded in 2004 to develop systems that would meet the special needs of semiconductor design and debug laboratories. Our first product was an innovative Laser Assisted Chemical Etching (LACE) and Laser Chemical Vapor Deposition (LCVD) system, VarioEdit, that enables rapid, ultra-thin preparation of silicon ICs for focused ion beam circuit edit.

The thickness measurement system that we developed in the VarioEdit proved to be very effective for accurate feedback when grinding and polishing packaged IC. Our second product was soon launched and became the VarioMetric line of measuring microscopes.

 

Our third product, VarioProfile, was again developed based on the needs of our customers who wanted to map both the thickness and curvature of packaged IC for CNC sample preparation.

After VarioProfile, we realized that we could design a CNC from scratch, with thickness feedback and adaptive 5-axis grinding and polishing that could outperform existing solutions. Varioscale proposed and was funded to develop the first prototype of the VarioMill under a US Government sponsored program called CAT. Today, VarioMill is routinely used by both commercial and US Government customers to prepare ultra-thin IC die, packaged IC and IC in modules.

Over the years, we have worked with our customers to improve all our products to keep them relevant to the latest technology. Most importantly Varioscale represents a reliable partner in developing innovative solutions with a peer-to-peer knowledge of the end applications.

More recently, Varioscale has taken on the challenge of developing advanced solutions for hardware Cybersecurity including an ambitious project to delayer and image an entire 10 nm integrated circuit. Again we are developing novel systems that use ion sputtering, gas chemistry and optical measurement to delayer with < 10 nm precision. Our state-of-the-art research laboratory funded by the US Government has achieved delayering, imaging, and data processing that is orders of magnitude faster and larger than any other teardown lab in the world.

During the pandemic, we have continued to operate as an essential business to support our customers while retaining all our valued employees. Although times are uncertain, Varioscale will continue to grow as a stable, established, privately held, small business.
